The Yorker reported that after Twitter rumours prompted fears of a demonstration by the English Defence League, a large show of support for York’s Muslim community took place in the form of a counter-demonstration involving many York students, members of the academic faculty. More than 100 supporters of the mosque had gone there after learning of the planned EDL protest.

Members of the York mosque served tea and biscuits to English Defence League supporters after the far-right group had arranged a demonstration there. About six people turned up to protest at the mosque in Bull Lane, York, on Sunday and were invited inside to play football with worshippers.

Father Tim Jones, who went to the Bull Lane mosque, which is situated in his parish, said: “I think the world can learn from what happened outside that mosque on Sunday.”
